Are you looking for a fun way for your kids to learn history? This Puzzles Unit Study is the perfect way to teach them about the history of puzzles. Not only will they learn about how puzzles are made but they will learn how it became a favorite past-time during the Great Depression.
It includes 7 activities featuring the following subjects:
- Language Arts
- History
- Math
- Art
This unit study is designed to engage the student in what they are learning. It includes hands-on activities mixed in with the reading assignment.
For younger students, a parent or teacher will need to facilitate this unit study. However, older students can be given a copy and expected to lead themselves through it.
Teaching Tip from Kaycee:
This is how I taught this unit study in my homeschool:
You are about to see one of my favorite unit studies of all time! I was inspired to write it because our ten-year-old son Andy is fascinated with puzzles and will spend hours upon hours doing them.
I had never really stopped and asked, “Where do puzzles come from?” and before long I too became enthralled with their history.
Teaching about the historical events like the Great Depression can sometimes be a challenge for me and this study provided the perfect opportunity to teach it while adding in some fun. Did you know that people who were unemployed during the Great Depression would make a puzzle and then rent it out so they could make money? I didn’t either!
Of course, a Puzzles Unit Study would not be complete without making a puzzle. The child is challenged to create their own puzzle and then get someone to put it together for them. This is harder than it looks.
We had so much fun as we all worked together trying to solve everyone’s puzzles. To make things a little simpler, I paired up my children and had them trade puzzles. They worked to put their sibling´s puzzle together and if they needed help other people jumped in.
